The City of Lucerne Joins EUROGI: Strengthening Local Authority Participation in Europe’s Geospatial Community
The European Umbrella Organisation for Geographic Information (EUROGI) is pleased to announce that the City of Lucerne has joined its network. This marks a significant step in expanding the participation of local authorities within EUROGI, reflecting the central role that municipalities play in applying geospatial solutions to address everyday challenges.
The City of Lucerne has long recognized the importance of geospatial information, with its history of using maps dating back to at least 1890. This commitment has evolved into the modern-day Geospatial Information Centre (GIS). This city department acts as an expert hub and service provider for urban planning and utility management. The center has consistently adapted to technological changes, from the first cadastral survey in 1900 to the adoption of digital technologies in the 1990s and the creation of a 3D city model in 2012. Today, it continues to innovate with spatial analysis applications and the introduction of a new BIM (Building Information Modeling) division in 2025.
