Eurogi Webinar: Mapping road damage using AI

Eurogi Webinar: Mapping road damage using AI

Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM CET

To monitor the condition of the road surface, a mapping of its existing condition should ideally be carried out on a regular basis to detect any damage and determine its extent. However, performing a visual interpretation is a subjective and labour-intensive process. This also complicates periodic, comparable monitoring of the road surface condition.

A more efficient solution involves applying object detection, a form of Artificial Intelligence, to mobile mapping data. After detection, the damages are georeferenced and geospatially joined to track them in time.

Combining the obtained inventory with contextual information in a GIS, such as, traffic intensity, the proportion of vulnerable road users, accident data or other sources, allows targeted decisions to be made when determining priority maintenance.
