DDGI and Partners Release Paper Advocating for GI as a Key Enabler of German and European Policy

We are pleased to announce the release of a position paper by EUROGI’s member DDGI, the German umbrella organization for Geographic Information, and German partner organizations from the GI sector. This comprehensive position paper outlines key recommendations and strategic priorities for the advancement of GI within Germany and across Europe in the current legislative period.

The collaborative effort behind this document highlights the critical role of geographic information in addressing contemporary challenges like digital transformation, geopolitical uncertainties, climate change, and the energy transition, fostering innovation.

The paper emphasizes the need for robust GI infrastructures, enhanced data accessibility, and the integration of GI into policy-making processes. The German GI community, with its technological, scientific, and practical expertise, is ready to make a decisive contribution to the successful implementation of government goals by offering concrete, technology-supported solutions to central future questions.

The position paper also addresses the importance of education and training in GI to build a skilled workforce capable of leveraging the full potential of geospatial technologies. It calls on the German government to recognize the strategic role of GI, to promote it specifically, and to integrate it into the legislative, infrastructural, and digital policy measures of the current legislative period.

The full position paper is available in German for download as PDF. We encourage all stakeholders to review this document and to join us in discussing and advocating for a stronger, more integrated geographic information ecosystem.
