Representing EUROGI, President Alejandro Guinea de Salas will join an international panel of experts to discuss the evolving role of geodesy in supporting modern society.
Geodesy: The Invisible Backbone of the Digital World
From satellite navigation and Earth observation to climate monitoring and infrastructure management, modern systems rely on precise positioning and timing. At the core of this lies geodesy: the science that defines the Earthโs shape, orientation, and gravitational field.
Satellite systems, in particular, depend on continuous updates about both their own position and the Earthโs dynamics. Without accurate geodetic data, many of the services that underpin daily life and economic activity would degrade or fail.
These capabilities are sustained through a global geodesy supply chain, involving:
โข Ground-based observation networks
โข Data centres ensuring quality and accessibility
โข Analysis centres generating geodetic products
This globally distributed system enables the accuracy and reliability required for positioning, navigation, and a wide range of geospatial applications.
A Global Effort: The Role of the United Nations
ECOSOC established the Committee of Experts as the apex intergovernmental mechanism for making joint decisions and setting directions with regard to the production, availability and use of geospatial information within national, regional, and global policy frameworks.
Led by United Nations Member States, UN-GGIM aims to address global challenges regarding the use of geospatial information, including in the development agendas, and to serve as a body for global policymaking in the field of geospatial information management
The creation of the United Nations Global Geodetic Centre of Excellence reflects the growing recognition of geodesy as critical infrastructure.
Building on the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 69/266 on a Global Geodetic Reference Frame for Sustainable Development, the Centre supports international cooperation to ensure that geodetic infrastructure remains accurate, accessible, and sustainable.
